Stanford
There are over 100 Eichler homes located in the beautiful environs of the Stanford University property. Virtually all of the homes are considerably larger than the homes found in the “normal” communities of Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, etc. They are recognizable Eichlers with more square footage devoted to the home, in particular the living or “gathering” spaces. They are usually set on the larger lots and rather secluded by the mature landscaping. Frank Lloyd Wright fans and devotees will probably recognize the famous “Hana House” of the world renown architect, located on Frenchmans Road. However, Stanford Eichlers are only available to faculty and staff, and each property is still on leased land of Stanford University.
Palo Alto
Palo Alto is often spoken of as the original home of Eichler Homes so many years ago. It is true that more Eichlers were built in Palo Alto than in any other community and that two headquarter offices were located in Palo Alto. Almost 3000 Eichler homes were built in this city and on the neighboring Stanford University grounds. Palo Alto is home to some of the most well-known enclaves including Greenmeadow, Fairmeadow, Green Gables and Los Arboles but you will find less well known and defined enclaves throughout much of this famous northern California community. Mountain View
Mountain View Eichlers are found in two distinct enclaves. Over 200 homes were built in the more sizeable Monta Loma enclave in the mid 1950's while the other enclave contains almost 75 homes of later design that were built in the early 1970's. Cupertino
Cupertino Eichlers, about 225 of them, are located in the Fairgrove enclave. Now the home of Apple Computer and often viewed as the heart of silicon valley, Cupertino was the site of this new "orchard" - homes - of this bountiful fruit producing area of the valley. Built in the late 1950's and early 1960's, most of the homes are of Jones & Emmons design, and can be found in southern Cupertino near Bollinger Road. Don't mistake the homes east of Tantau Avenue for Eichlers -- they are not. Many of them are Stern & Price designs located in what is known as the "Rancho" area. Sunnyvale
Sunnyvale Eichlers enjoy an interesting part of Eichler history. It was here that Joe Eichler began his homebuilding career, and it is here that a good many - about 150 - of his last Claude Oakland designed homes are located. Built in the late 1960's and early 1970's, these striking homes are among the approximate 1100 Eichlers located in this lovely, progressive community. Santa Clara
Home to several complexes of Eichler town homes on Pomeroy and Benton, these communities offer a very affordable entry point for Eichler ownership. These Eichler “cooperatives” come in both single story and two story town homes where they must be owner occupied, adding to the Eichler appreciation. San Jose
San Jose, the southern-most city of northern California Eichlers, boast 5 distinct enclaves of homes built from the early 1950's to the early 1960's. Containing over 500 homes are the communities in Willow Glen, west San Jose near Campbell, and the “Rose Glen” area nearby San Jose City College. Los Altos
Los Altos contains approximately 50 Eichlers, not including several “specials” -- custom built Eichlers on individual lots, usually located in the area of Los Altos Hills. 9 of those homes were built in 1974, the year of Joe Eichlers death, and the remainder located in another area of Los Altos off of Fallenleaf Lane, were built in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Saratoga
At the time of construction, Saratoga Eichlers were relatively close neighbors of the Paul Masson Champagne Cellars -- one of the village’s claim to fame at the time. While the 35 Eichlers still remain in this lovely foothill community between Los Gatos and Cupertino, the cellar gave way to residential development during the 1980’s. Eichlers here enjoy approximately one-third acre lots, and built between 1964 and 1970, most if not all of the homes are of Claude Oakland design. Monte Sereno
Monte Sereno enjoys two unique characteristics within all Eichlers ever built. This small, exclusively residential community of about 3500 people located between Los Gatos and Saratoga, contains the smallest contiguous number of Eichler homes -- 16 -- of any community containing Eichlers. And all 16, built from 1969 to 1971, share the same street, Via Sereno. As is often the case with the latter day enclaves, most if not all of the homes are of Claude Oakland design. San Mateo / San Mateo Highlands
San Mateo enjoys 2 Eichler enclaves; one community “down below” in the 19th Avenue area, an area of the early 1950 Eichlers and therefore much smaller home; and the other area “above” in the San Mateo Highlands, a much larger enclave that was developed in the later 1950’s. The 19th Avenue homes are of Anshen + Allen design, and the Highlands Eichlers were designed by both Anshen + Allen as well as Jones & Emmons. Both areas have been popular for families whose work requires commuting to either northern or southern companies. Menlo Park / Atherton
Some of the earliest Eichlers built are to be found in Menlo Park and Atherton. Given the timing, it is not surprising that the firm of Anshen + Allen were the architects that designed most of these homes. The homes are located in two particular areas of Menlo Park; the earlier styles are located near Stanford University property, and larger homes, often designed by the firm of Jones & Emmons, are located in the Menlo Oaks area of Menlo Park. Approximately 20 homes proudly sitting on acre-sized lots are located in Atherton, most in the Lindenwood area.
